Is Cranbrook School Closed? An Expert's Perspective

Cranbrook's 319-acre historic grounds provide an unparalleled preparatory school environment, with resources that are unrivaled by any other. Elizabeth Briarbank Nursing Home, 39315 Woodward Ave., saw the closure of its downtown campus in October. In response to threats directed at nearby schools and districts, some have adjusted their operations accordingly. In 1985, Cranbrook and Kingswood schools merged to form a blended higher education institution.

The FBI released a statement on Thursday, noting that they were aware of threats being made on social media towards schools. The Cranbrook educational community purchased the abandoned campus on April 15th, with the intention of using its various buildings and 70 dorm rooms as temporary housing for Cranbrook boarding students while the current private school dorms are being renovated. High school was divided into gender-specific campuses in 1984, rather than becoming mixed. The Cranbrook Children's School, designed by world-famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, began operating in 1927.

Of the 800 high school students (grades 9 to 12) enrolled at Cranbrook, 240 are interns, and approximately half of the school's 140 art graduate students reside in on-campus dorms. Cranbrook Schools is part of the Cranbrook Educational Community (CEC), which includes the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cranbrook House and Gardens. Additionally, there is an exchange program between Cranbrook School and Cranbrook School of Kent in Kent, England, in honor of George Booth's legacy. The conception and design of the Cranbrook and Kingswood schools were heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, which began in 19th century England. During the summer months, Cranbrook schools offer a variety of day and boarding programs on their campus.

After a school shooting occurs in a community, similar threats often appear in nearby schools and districts. Architecture critic Paul Goldberger of The New York Times called the Cranbrook campus one of the best campuses ever created in the world. So is Cranbrook School closed? As of now, no; however, due to threats directed at nearby schools and districts, some operations have been adjusted accordingly.
