Science

The Science Department aims to:

  • Provide an excellent, enjoyable, broad and balanced science education for all pupils.
  • Encourage pupils to become independent learners at a level suitable for their ability.
  • Develop knowledge, skills and experience of scientific methods of in order to allow pupils to evaluate scientific issues in the real world.
  • Allow pupils to explore the ethical, economic and environment implications of scientific discovery.

 More specifically the Science department aims to help each student:

 a) Understand the process of cause and effect through experiment and testing.

 b) Develop an open and inquiring mind.

 c) Develop a critical faculty.

 d) Make reasoned judgements.

 e) Understand the relevance of science in today’s rapidly changing world.

 f) Understand the scientific issues discussed in the media and be able to make a reasoned judgement about the truth of claims made.

 g) Understand the ethical, moral and economic issues associated with advancements made in science and technology.

 h) Be able to put forward a logical, cohesive and well structured argument in favour of, or, against currently held views and ideas.

 e) Enjoy science.

The science offered throughout the school is designed to be commensurate with the cognitive development of the students.
