Key Stage 1 (Prep 1 - 2 Infants) Age 6 - 7 years
Welcome to the Infants Department
In the Infant Department the children have the opportunity to further develop the skills they have already learnt in Nursery. There is also a more formal style of education consisting of a full and varied curriculum which encourages creativity, independence and self-confidence. The department consists of Reception, Year1 and Year 2.
Here we concentrate mainly on the three core subjects of English, Maths and Science. We believe that if your child has a solid grasp of these areas they will enjoy and progress well in other areas too. But for all its emphasis on these fundamental subjects, our curriculum is also creative and allows for cross-curricular teaching of these sometimes through topics, which both the teachers and children very much enjoy. We follow the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. phonics scheme of reading and writing.
All children in the infant department are taught French, PE and Music by specialist teachers and have the opportunity, for an additional fee, of taking Elocution classes or learning to play a musical instrument. After school enrichment clubs are run by the teachers, affording our children further extra-curricular activities.
One of the highlights of our weeks is our assembly, in which we recognise children who have worked hard and celebrate their achievements.
In the Infant Department we follow the Golden RulesTop of Bottom of Form
- We are gentle - We don't hurt others
- We are kind and helpful - We don't hurt anybody's feelings
- We listen - We don't interrupt
- We are honest - We don't cover up the truth
- We work hard - We don't waste our own or others time
- We look after property - We don't damage or waste things
Children are taught these rules through assemblies, lessons, circle time, PSHE and play.
Special events throughout the year
Christmas is always a time when families join in the festivities. The Infants put on a performance for parents and carers at the end of the Autumn term.
As part of our Easter competitions parents and children enjoy designing and making Easter bonnets. And we incorporate a pancake race.
Sports day is always an exciting time where children participate in activities like running, egg and spoon race and obstacle races. Parents are also encouraged to take part and we can boast that we always have a very good turn out.
In the summer term we also have a special Prize Giving event to recognise and reward talented and hardworking pupils. It is also an opportunity for everyone to enjoy performing a musical recital or poem.
We regularly invite speakers from the local community (including the Emergency Services) to be involved in school life.
Each term we have a charity fundraising event and we enjoy acknowledging the diversity of our local community by learning about other cultures and celebrating Black History Month.
Key Stage One News
Dear Parents,
Yesterday we, in Year 2, were treated to a special signing session with Mrs Butt, Deen’s mother. Mrs Butt is a qualified British Sign Language expert. We all had great fun learning the Fingerspelling alphabet and using it to sign our names, ages and the places where we lived. And at the end we were thrilled with our special badges and certificates and sign language goodies! We would like to thank Mrs Butt, a great deal, for such an enjoyable session that also taught us so much.
